Enameled Dutch Oven Care 101: Five Minutes for a Lifetime Pot

An enameled cast iron Dutch oven is the closest thing cookware gets to an heirloom — but only if you treat it right. The good news: enamel asks far less of you than raw cast iron. No seasoning, no rust anxiety. Here is the complete care routine, distilled to five minutes.

1. Wash Warm, Dry Promptly

Hand wash with warm water and a soft sponge after each use. The golden rule of enamel: avoid thermal shock. Never plunge a hot pot into cold water — let it cool first, then wash. Towel-dry right away instead of air-drying to keep the finish spotless.

2. Skip the Metal

Reach for wooden or silicone utensils. Metal can chip the enamel over time, and steel wool or abrasive scouring pads are out entirely. For stuck-on food, soak in warm soapy water for 15 minutes — it will release on its own.

3. Lift Stubborn Stains with Baking Soda

Got a faint discoloration from years of curries and braises? Make a paste of baking soda and water, apply with a soft cloth in gentle circles, rinse, and dry. Avoid citrus-based cleaners and bleach, which can dull the gloss.

4. Mind the Heat

Enamel loves medium and low heat — the cast iron core holds it beautifully, so high flames are unnecessary and can scorch food onto the surface. Our pots are oven-safe to 500°F (260°C), and the enamel handles temperatures from –20°C to 300°C.

5. Store It Smart

Place a soft cloth or paper towel between the lid and the pot when stacking, and never drop a heavy lid onto the rim — chips happen at the edges first. A little care here pays off for decades.

Why It Matters

Our Rule of 5 demands long-term value from everything we sell: built to last, not to be discarded. Five minutes of care after dinner is what turns a great pot into the one you hand down. That is the whole idea behind Natura AM Lifestyle — fewer, better, more meaningful things.
